HURRICANE SCRAMBLE
by Robert Taylor

In August 1940, The Battle of Britain was at its height. Great armadas of Luftwaffe aircraft made incessant attacks on Southern Britain throughout the day. The unmistakeable roar of the Merlin engines fills the fighter station once again as the Hurricanes scramble into the air. It is their sixth sortie of the day. Such was the desparation of the Battle that it was commonplace for the young RAF pilots to fly and fight from dawn to dusk during that hot summer of 1940. The redoubtable Hawker Hurricane bore the brunt of the operational combat flying during the epic Battle of Britain, accounting for no fewer than four fifths of air victories scored by the British fighter pilots. Without this wonderfully stable fighter aircraft, and the determination and courage of its young pilots, the battle would never have been won. Robert Taylor's unique ability, together with his great knowledge of the subject gained by firsthand research and discussion with Battle of Britain pilots, has enabled him to paint this truly exceptional picture. In his inimitable and unmistakable style, he has captured perfectly the atmosphere of the "Scramble" set in an airfield scene so typical of those frantic days in the summer of 1940. The prints carry the original signatures of four famous Battle of Britain Aces: Bob Doe, Bee Beamont, Peter Brothers, and Sir Denis Crowley-Milling. A truly historic collectors' print.
