On February 15, 1944, flying his Navy Patrol Squadron 34 PBY Catalina on air-sea rescue duty south of New Ireland, Lt. Nathan Gordan received an urgent call. Several 345th BG B25s were down following a major attack on Kavieng, and crews were in the water just offshore. Under intense gunfire from the shore, Gordan made no fewer than four perilous water landings to pick up survivors, returning to make an emergency landing at Cape Gloucester with 25 people aboard, and just 10 gallons of fuel in his tnks. Gordan was awarded the Medal of Honor. Lt. Nathan Gordan was the first Navy flyer to be awarded the Medal of Honor in the S.W. Pacific. Each copy of BLACK CAT RESCUE has a small remarque painting of a PBY Catalina printed in full color in the margin. The Catalina was the most successful patrol flying boat of WWII and was operated in all theaters by both the RAF and US Forces. It is signed by Lt. Nathan Gordan and artist Nicolas Trudgian. Print is in excellent condition and comes with Certificate of Authenticity.
