MARAUDER MISSION (AP)
1250 Signed and Numbered Print
125 Artist Proofs
By the Spring of 1944, nearly 60 years ago, the US Ninth had become the
largest Air Force ever to be assembled under one Command. As the American Air
Force's tactical air armada assembled for the forthcoming invasion of
Continental Europe, its 3500 airplanes equipped Fighter, Bomber, Troop Carrier,
Reconnaissance, and Liaison Squadrons. From its formation in England in the Fall
of 1943, the Ninth made its presence felt, gaining air superiority, distrupting
enemy communications, and ultimately destroying enemy forces at the front line.
The Ninth Air Force had become the most effective force in the knocking out of
VI rocket sites, railroad yards, bridges and other enemy positions in Northern
France, and by May 1944, was despatching more than one thousand aircraft each
day against targets in Normandy and Pas de Calais. One of the most effective
weapons in their armoury was the
B-25 Marauder. A sleek twin-engined medium bomber, which had arrived in Europe
with a dubioius reputation, but which was to prove itself to be one of the most
remarkale aircraft of the war. No other bomber in any Theater had a lower loss
rate than this attrractive aircraft, one famous B-26 completing over 200
missions in hostile skies. In paying tribute to the deeds of the Valiant 9th,
Robert depicts YANKEE GUERRILLA in the company with other B-26s of the 386th
Bomb Group returning from a raid on the VI
rocket sites in the Pas de Calais in the cold sunlight of a January evening,
1944. A beautiful painting worthy of the courageous aircrews of the B-26
Marauder and the first depicting this aircraft. Print is signed by three B-26
pilots: General John Moench,
Colonel Roland Scott and Colonel Ashley Woolridge.
